The anatomy of a DCS Mission #43
What makes a good DCS Mission?

Please opine on what you think makes a good DCS mission.

Maybe your not a mission maker, maybe your just the average player, not even a member of this squadron, you just want to login and play the game, support your team, get some kills, and get in and out with out getting shot down right? You don't know the first thing about scripting and you don't care to! Who wants to read all that gobballygook anyway... you just want to be able to use a certain tactic, or particular piece of terrain for a specific type of mission, and you haven't seen it developed yet..or have but wish'ed it had x y or z. What obsticals do you like to face? How do you feel about flight times, night times, and them times you just can't get to the target because of Scorpion

Maybe your a mission maker, have made missions in the past, or will make missions in the future; What components do you like to include? Do you prefer static or moving targets and how do you deal with the issues that arise with those. How do you setup the mission in such a ways as to encourage team work?

Any map that has the 99th logo emblazoned upon the mission briefing should contain the following features: I will start us off.. please add to this list..

[*]
[*]The Mission Briefing should tell you; where; what; why; we are fighting.
[*]The Mission Briefing should have the 99th Logo + additional images to help folks along. See Tracer's mission briefings for an idea.
[*]Consider Flight times to allow for strategy & fuel concerns.
[*]Enough aircraft to fly with your element.
[*]Enough SAMs to defend your base reasonably and to keep the attack aircraft on their toes, but not so much that it's impossible to do anything before SEAD.
[*]Day and Night version.
[*]Make use of scripts & mods that can enhance the mission.

(I will update this original post with the ideas that come from you all.)

Here's some things that all my favorite missions have in common.

-Both sides are attacking the same area trying to support their troops

-Longer flights for fighters to allow for more strategy

-enough aircraft and targets to fly with your element

-no time limit screwing up the fun (SLmod is better Imo)

-enough SAMs to defend your base reasonably and to keep the attack aircraft on their toes, but not so much that it's impossible to do anything before SEAD.

-night is ok but it's pretty much impossible to fly the KA-50 or MiG-21 in the pitch dark. Create 2 versions so we can just choose when we load it up

-waypoints are not necessary for the work involved putting them in imo

Basically I like to take my time and think my mission plans through. I dislike the 'get some' style when you take off, shoot all your shit, and rearm without even losing sight of the airport.

I love to use systems. When I'm in an A10, Huey, MI8, or any other craft with working radios or that sort of thing it's just more immersive. I can't tell you how much fun it is to not use a pre-set way point, but instead use a radio beacon. Another fun element is getting alerts for an A10 to punch in a new point on the fly. Missions that have active events that in some way support the overall fight are just cool. Red anvil was cool like that for a long time because of a-10 side missions.

Most of the other things I like are already being done in missions as of late.

TL,DR:
-Use of aircraft systems (radios, TACAN, Nav Computer)
-Side Missions

-Relevant tasks available for all types of flights. There are far too many missions that either ignore helicopters or focus entirely on helicopters while ignoring a-g and a-a fixed wing.

What kind of tasks for fighters? I tend to focus on helo and hawg missions and cap is always there for... Cap..

I never think of side missions for them.

What else would you suggest?
