RAM fixed it. #356
So I was having performance issues in DCS 2.0 where my FPS was fine but the whole game would lock up for seconds at a time, sometimes for minutes. The more that was going on in the server, the worse it would be.

My PC is probably considered low-end by now, the specs are:

i5-2500k @4.3GHz
GTX 660 w/ 1.6Gb vRAM
8GB DDR3 1600GHz
DCS Installed on a SSD

It was a toss-up between the RAM and the vRAM because both were being maxed out, so I went for the cheaper option first and hoped I didn't have to upgrade my GPU.

I'm happy to say it worked! I had 2 more slots on the motherboard so I ordered the exact same ram I already had, stuck them in, and everything works perfect now.

The vRAM is still maxed, but I suspect it just offloads to the RAM ones it fills up so its not a big deal.

I think ED needs to set their minimum ram requirement higher, as I'm now using a minimum of 10.6Gb as soon as I log onto a MP server.

Glad that fixed the problem. A RAM upgrade made the biggest difference on my computer. I've recommended RAM upgrades to several people lately because the minimums are definitely that... the minimum required to function at a basic level. I'm still getting low FPS due to my GTX-560 needing to be upgraded but I should have that rectified by March.

I'm glad too. It's funny because I always though that more than 8 was excessive. After all, having extra sitting there isn't helping anything.

DCS 2 is the first program I've run into that used more than 5. At least the price of ram is way down, I picked mine up for $70. I was adding to my existing ram so I needed the same specs, but if I wasn't I could have gotten 16Gb of faster 'gaming' ram for $130 CAD.

My next step looks like it should be the GPU, but my SSD is full too due to arma mods and Nevada's massive file size. I'm going to have to figure out how to get the Georgian theater to fit in there too.

I'm sure you already know this but if you're adding to your existing ram then make sure the new stuff has the same frequency, voltage, and timing as whatever is already installed on your machine. Otherwise it won't work.

nicely done, and that faster "gaming" ram doesn't really help you unless you are overclocking, its a stability thing kinda like higher octane in your cars to prevent detonation.

well, the ram will work, but if the computer detects a RAM mismatch, itll force them to run at the slower - looser timed settings of the slower sticks, idk about voltage.. this is a problem i havnt experienced but id avoid if possible. id try to get the exact same model as the one you have. if not consider replacing an older version with more capacity newer version, also another thing to consider is your motherboards capability on the speed, if you get say... 2400 hz ram, but the motherboard can only handle 1600.. your stuck with 1600.
