By request.. several copies of existing missions with the T.H.E. prefix are now on the server. These settings are as follows:

Disabled: F2 views
Disabled: F10 Map (cept your own position)
Enabled: User Map Marks

Awesome! I cant wait to try some of the missions out.

One issue I see is in Administration. With these settings we will only know if someone is pulling some douchbaggery after they have caused the disruption.

From talking to a couple of regulars today a few of the issues they have are:
Tactical Commander- absolutely required to win a map and place defenses. On the plus side with fog of war on he can also act as GCI. This slot absolutely has to be on TS.

VID of friendlies and enemies- We need to ensure as much as possible that the forces on the map are visually different from each other and if possible keep the forces east vs. west or at least delineate what side has what.

Communications- In these types of missions TS is all but required for coordination. Typing is not the best way to communicate but many of the pubbies use this as their only means of communication.

I like the idea very much. Excellent for when you know you've got enough people around and working together to really crank up the difficulty level as opposed to something just running 24/7 and driving everyone away because they can't even get off the ground before the AI smokes 'em.

Vampyre raises some excellent points, particularly about administrating. Consider his post "second-ed."

No friendly fog of war makes flying the f-5 or any other aircraft without IFF useless. I have trouble shooting down friendlies with Fog of war let alone without. I can do without the F2 views although the F2 views does allow me to watch other fliers as they make great run ins or dogfights. Takes away the enjoyment for me. Sorry. I think the rules are too strict again just my opinion.

I see your point there. And agree. I don't think any of us would really want the "fun" missions to go away altogether from the server list, or otherwise be updated out of all recognition into a "stuck in the cockpit of your own aircraft only" versions. The more relaxed versions should stay, IMHO. However, I kind of think we should have a couple of missions with much increased difficulty along these lines to enable us to push up the bar and require our cooperation and communication to keep the bigger picture of the scenario in focus. They could be more like Squadron night missions we could arrange, every so often.

I feel we'd all benefit from the experience gained, as we are a VS that goes up against others on events, after all. Outside that, the rest is, and should remain, fun on line between us all.

You are using the tool wrong. The F-5E is not meant to go toe to toe with 4th gen opposition and has a slight disadvantage against even the MiG-21. Even with GCI The F-5E requires VID for a shot which means that you have to close with your target. You have to do this with or without the F10 icons anyway... and F10 is not foolproof either as I have seen friendly aircraft that have taken damage that do not appear on the F10 map. In my view, the F-5E is best used more as a strike or interdiction platform than as a fighter in most of our missions.

These missions aren't meant to replace the easy missions. They are meant to improve the capabilities of our pilots and provide a change of pace to the usual missions... Did anyone else note the amount of players on last night? I wouldn't say it was an unpopular change even with the initial whining from some of the stick actuators.

A few observations from last night:
I think it would be prudent to include a GCI slot in addition to the TAC commander. Just having a single Tac Commander means that he will get sucked in to concentrating on one role and lose track of the other of what is going on.

From what I saw last night the comms were a mess. Even with shadow calling "break, break" to try to clear them for more important information he was still being talked over by the less courteous who absolutely had to say they were seeing ground fire or couldn't operate the systems of their aircraft and had to let every one know it for some reason...

The admin issue I noted earlier reared its ugly head with the DCS nuke glitch.

I like the idea of added difficulty! But, I also think that a lot of enjoyment comes from the 99th server not being like most... "ULTRA REAL MODE ALL THE TIME" servers. So a mix of T.H.E. and regular would be nice. Admins can throw up a T.H.E. version when there are enough competent individuals airborne.

I can appreciate the realism that THE mode brings, and can fly either way. In the modules I use, nav-wise I know how to fly around and set/track to waypoints, etc. Not that big a deal. The largest issue I have with it is the lack of friendly units on f10.

In the mistral gazelle, I -have- to check f10 to see if a target is friendly or enemy, before firing. I cannot just fly alongside the target to identify its paint scheme to see if it's an enemy, and then shoot. I barely have 3-5 seconds to decide/check/shoot as it is. (to be fair, I don't fly that one very often) The same issue exists within the 25T for its air-to-air weapons. With THE mode in place, I just won't shoot; where before, i'd check the map, be sure it's not friendly, and then shoot.

The lack of F2 is a minor issue for the 25/mirage, but with the Gazelle, part of my startup routine is to pop out to F2 to be sure I have a tail - 30% or so of the time, I don't have one. With THE mode, I have to go through all 3-4 minutes of startup, only to find that it doesn't lift off, and i have to switch slots and start over. I also -often- switch around to other planes when i'm doing FAC, because there's really nothing for me to do otherwise while i'm sitting there hovering. I usually switch to watch the person coming in to bomb on my targets rather than just staring into nothingness for 45-50 minutes while the fuel gauge ticks down. And then when they do drop bombs, i watch F6 to be able to report on whether or not they're tracking. Can't now. End of the world? No. Just ensures boredom. :-/

I tried to use the F-5E last night as a strike aircraft and I lost 7 of them. If you wasn't flying a 4th gen fighter or a Helicopter you was going thru the start up procedures because you were getting blown out of the sky.

After I did go to a Mirage last night I did have a little more fun. But I like the F-5E and I want to continue to fly it but without friendly F10 or F2 views it just not as much fun as watching my buddy turn and burn with Yoshi or WD16 over the battle area as I am ingressing to the target.

Just my opinion.

Yeah, we really need the F2/F10 stuff back for admin purposes. The cost vs. benefit of having a little bit more challenging an environment doesn't outweigh the need to be able to quickly change over an aircraft and see what's happening. And it's not much extra in the way of a challenge, the biggest thing that it prevents is someone watching in F2 or F6 and giving people information about air-to-air missile launches and that doesn't happen that often anyways.

Plus the number of people who can effectively communicate or understand where they are in relation to their teammates (without maintaining visual from takeoff) is very low. I don't think it encourages more TS teamwork to overcome the information deficit, it just means that coordinating positions is left up to chance or guesswork at best.
